That young man didn't think it was too "groovy"

Real Groovy Records has gone into receivership, and I really don't care. The original Auckland branch became somewhat notable as a place to spot celebrates when they were in town. Two years ago you could see Henry Rollins or Omar Rodriguez shopping there like common plebs, and I owe that store to my Jack White anecdote. I suppose the Auckland shop would be an actual loss, as there aren't any other secondhand record shops in the CBD. Wellington will always have Slow Boat, but I suppose Real Groovy's fiscal troubles signal the arrival of faster broadband in the antipodes. The real issue is whether this means that bands with stop touring here, and again, I can't really pretend like I care too much. Considering that The Big Gay Out hasn't been relevant since '95, and the locals never really understood inclusive concert etiquette. A metal show usually involves having your head stoved in by skinheads in black T-shirts. Any D 'n B gig is far too scene, and something a lil' more highbrow will be attended by pedant students who won't be satisfied until they make sure you know that they know more about the entertainer than you ever will.

So music is dead as a municipal
, tangible 'product'. Any halfwit can record derivative nonsense using any freeware, open a MySpace, upload it, and become a meme in Sweden. Worked for me. Move on

I have been searching for this for over a year. Reviewed awhile ago on RYM. If anything else you must watch La Passion de Janne d'Arc, pronto.

Andrew's Complete Waste 'o' Time

After an 8 hour transit flight it which my right foot swelled up to elephantiasis proportions, causing great pain and blisters to pop and stain my shoes with blood, I spent an hour weeping in the humorless immigration cells. Pawing through my underpants and the cards in my wallet, it was decided I was a "drug runner" for only being in Croatia for 3 days ("Croatia is where all the drugs come from"), and I was to be strip searched by a buck nig-nog with sausage fingers. Nothing makes a man feel more welcome after such a long uncomfortable flight like having his anus probed by a Marsellus Wallace doppelganger. Choking back the tears as he fondled the seam on my testicles, I was tempted to say "Do I look like a bitch?!... Then why you try and fuck me like a bitch?!", but the mood didn't call for it.

Iva Bittová

Iva Bittová is a Czech violinist whom I am deeply enamored. Soulful Avant-Garde par excellence.
A good starting point are her 1991 debut, and her collab with guitarist Vladimír Václavek.
For more, pop 'round to 'ere and 'ave a listen.

Amira Medunjanin - Rosa

To kick start what will hopefully blossom into a wealth of obscurios in this here blog, I will begin posting overlooked gems in the field of 'Ethnic' music. The Eastern Bloc (predominantly the former Yugoslavia) is an untapped wealth of such rarities, and unique music.

Amira Medunjanin is a Bosnian singer specialising in the traditional Bosnian genre of Sevdah (meaning bitterness and love at the same time). Songs are called sevdalinka (singular) or sevdalinke-plural. Her vocal acrobatics on this, her 2005 debut, are unparalleled in any other genre.
